ICL Surgery Cost

ICL surgery cost

Contact lenses are the most frequently used alternative to spectacles; they are safe, easy to use, and cost-effective. However, some people with severe visual impairment cannot use contact lenses because of eye problems or other factors.

In such cases, artificial eyes or glasses do not help correct vision. Hence, surgeons now recommend implantable contact lenses to correct vision in people who cannot wear regular contact lenses.

That article explains the ICL surgery cost in Turkey, Canada, the USA, and Australia.

What is ICL Surgery?

ICL surgery is a procedure that allows you to correct your vision without glasses, contacts, or corrective devices. The surgery involves implanting a tiny lens directly onto the eye. Talk to your doctor about whether that surgery is right for you.

The ICL lens procedure could be perfect for you. Implantable contact lenses are small micro-lenses implanted in the eye like a contact lens but can remain permanently. Read more about how much ICL eye surgery costs and if it’s right for you.

How is implantable contact lens Surgery Performed?

How ICL Surgery is Performed

A patient with a corneal disease that glasses or contact lenses cannot correct may qualify for an implantable contact lens.

  • An ophthalmologist performs the procedure in the office under local anesthesia.
  • The first step is to make a small incision in the eye’s sclera, or white part.
  • Next, an endoscope is inserted into that opening and placed against the eye to allow visualization during surgery. Next, a tiny hole is created in the cornea, and an optical implant (made of silicon) is placed over the hole. Next, the skin flap made earlier is folded back over the implant, and surgical glue is used to seal it in place.
  • The procedure takes about 10 minutes, and most patients can see immediately after surgery because the implant touches their cornea directly.
  • After that, a protective shield will be placed over both eyes until they heal fully (about three months).

Various types of implantable contact lens surgery

There are different types of ICLs, each with pros and cons. If you are thinking about ICL eye surgery, it is essential to know about each type of ICL before deciding on the best surgery for you.

The following two are the most common types:

Verisyse

Verisyse is a procedure that uses a contact lens to treat presbyopia in patients with a high prescription. Verisyse is a one-day surgery that takes about 20 minutes, and you can schedule it with your regular optometrist or ophthalmologist.

The procedure is done under local anesthesia and usually causes no pain or discomfort afterward. After surgery, you’ll need to wear glasses or contacts for two weeks until the lens implants heal, but after that, you’ll be able to see clearly without any correction.

STAAR

STAAR is a corneal inlay surgically implanted into the eye to correct

  1. myopia (nearsightedness),
  2. hyperopia (far-sightedness),
  3. Astigmatism.

The STAAR inlay is made of two parts: an outer ring and an inner ring. The outer ring is placed on the cornea’s surface, while the inner ring is at the curvature’s center.

Sometimes, the patient may also need surgery to treat other conditions such as cataracts or glaucoma.

It’s FDA approved for people at least 18 years old with moderate to high myopia (nearsightedness), short-sightedness, and astigmatism of 2.00 diopters or more that glasses or contact lenses cannot correct.

Alternative Treatment Options

If you’re putting off ICL surgery because of the cost, you may want to look into alternative treatment options.

There are a few FDA-approved contact lens surgeons that offer other options besides ICL eye surgery:

Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK)

Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) is a surgical procedure that uses an excimer laser to create a disk of tissue on the cornea.

Then, the surgeon folds up the tissue and removes it, creating a flap that can be lifted to access the underlying stroma. The result is clearer vision without glasses or contact lenses.

Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK)

Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) is another type of refractive surgery that uses an excimer laser to correct vision problems by reshaping the cornea.

Unlike LASIK, where the surgeon removes tissue from your cornea, PRK leaves some of it intact while reshaping it using a high-precision laser. The result is clearer vision without glasses or contact lenses.

Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE)

Lenticule extraction (LE) is a procedure to remove a small piece of the cornea and replace it with an artificial implant to correct myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism.

That alternative vision correction surgery is done in an outpatient procedure room and performed in less than 20 minutes.

The LE procedure uses a surgical microscope and special instruments to create a small incision on the surface of your eye.

Next, a tiny portion of your cornea is removed, which creates a space where the artificial lens will sit. The new lens replaces the removed cornea tissue and helps reshape your eye to see clearly without glasses or contacts.

Conductive Keratoplasty (CK)

Conductive keratoplasty (CK) uses an electrode placed on top of your eye to stimulate nerve endings in your cornea’s surface so that they conduct electricity better than usual and cause them to contract or “tighten.”

That may help reduce your nearsightedness, but it can take up to nine months to see results, if any since CK has only been tested on a few dozen people.

Who is a Candidate for Visian ICL?

The ideal candidate for ICL surgery is someone between 18 and 60 with a stable visual acuity, no other eye conditions or problems, and a history of at least 20/20 vision.

Additionally, candidates must be healthy, have no history of diabetes or any other systemic disease that could affect the eye (like hypertension, high cholesterol, or heart disease), and be able to provide informed consent before the surgery.

Candidates should also not have had any previous ocular surgery, including cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation or corneal refractive therapy with an ablative technique.

Benefits of Implantable Contact Lens  Surgery

The human eye is the window to the soul and an organ with a lot of depth and complexity. That’s why corrective eye surgeries are so precise and detailed in their correction.

So whether you prefer Google or Bing, here are some benefits of ICL eye surgery:

Continuous vision improvement

During a typical LASIK eye surgery, a laser is used to reshape the cornea, the transparent outer layer of the eye that’s responsible for transmitting light into the retina.

The cornea’s reshaping allows for improved vision by making the eye’s focus more precise. LASIK eye surgery only reshapes the cornea, though, and it does not change the curvature of the back of the eye, known as the retina.

A retina that remains too curved can lead to abnormal visual regression, where vision deteriorates over time.

Better quality of life

Many people suffer from low vision or the inability to see clearly. That can be caused by various factors, including aging, diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts.

In addition, people who have undergone corrective eye surgeries, such as LASIK or PRK, can experience a gradual decrease in their once-clear vision. As a result, people with low vision often have trouble reading, driving, or doing nearly any task that requires clear vision.

ICL eye surgery can reverse these issues, lifting the quality of life for people with low vision.

Possibility of restoring lost function

Possibility of restoring lost function

Some people have vision loss after surgeries, traumas, or diseases. That is called irreversible visual loss, which can occur due to macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetes, cataracts, and more.

ICL surgery can reverse some of these issues and return missing visual function to the patient. One example of irreversible visual loss is retinal detachment, in which the retina separates from the back of the eye. After the detachment, the light can’t reach the retina, and vision is lost.

Permanent contact lenses, which work by attaching a transparent lens to the back of the eye, can help improve vision in these scenarios. The lens can provide the retina with light and functionality that was lost.

Confidence in social situations

Many people with vision loss also suffer from social anxiety. That can occur because they fear being judged or embarrassed by their vision loss. Visian ICL can help improve confidence in social settings.

ICL eye surgery is a highly surgical process but leaves little visible damage to the eye. In addition, ICL surgery leaves the patient with little or no evidence of corrective eye surgery.

That makes the patient feel more confident about their eyesight and overall appearance.

No dry eye symptoms

Some people experience dry eye symptoms after corrective eye surgeries. Permanent contact lenses can help reduce these symptoms. Visian ICL works by increasing tear production and improving the quality of tears produced by the eyes. That can help prevent dry eye symptoms, such as

  • scratchy eyes,
  • discomfort in the eye sockets,
  • blurry vision. ICL surgery can also help prevent eye inflammation,
  • reducing eye infections and overall health.

Additionally, ICL surgery can improve overall eye health by protecting the eyes from UV light damage. UV light can damage the eyes over time, causing issues like cataracts and macular degeneration.

Conclusion

Overall, an Implantable Contact Lens is a great way to correct refractive errors, improve the quality of vision and improve the patient’s life. Given the advantages mentioned above, Implantable Contact Lens Surgery has been widely accepted by people all over the globe.

ICL surgery is still in its nascent stage, and as with any new technology, it requires improvement in design, materials, and final product to make it more effective and efficient. However, if tweaks are made to the device, permanent contact lenses will become more acceptable and mainstream.
