What Is Gastric Bypass Surgery?
It is a surgical procedure that helps you lose weight by changing how the stomach and small intestine absorb and digest food.
Gastric bypass, also known as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, is considered the “gold standard” of bariatric surgery.
It is done by creating a small stomach pouch and attaching it directly to a part of the small intestine.
After the procedure, food will go into this new pouch of the stomach and then directly into the small intestine, bypassing most of the stomach and part of your small intestine.
This surgery is useful if diet and exercise haven’t worked or when you have serious health problems because of your weight.

Keep in mind that this process is your last option after you’ve drained all attempts to lose weight by following diet and exercise without long-term response.
Your surgeon may advise this procedure if your body mass index (BMI) is 40 or more, or if your BMI between 35 and 40, and you have a health condition caused by obesity.
It would be best to commit to a special healthy diet after the surgery that fits the new changes in your stomach.

What are The Gastric Bypass Procedure Steps?
Before the surgery
Before you schedule the process, you need to meet your plastic surgeon, who will make some physical examinations, stomach endoscopy, and ask for different lab tests.
The surgeon will check your medical history by asking many questions like your medical problems, previous surgeries, and used medication.
Furthermore, he or she will explain to you all the risks and the complications associated with the procedure. If you qualify for this process surgery, the specialist will give you some instructions on preparing for surgery. It is essential to choose a highly skilled plastic surgeon to achieve the best results and avoid medical mistakes.
At HayatMed, we have the best consultant surgeons in the obesity treatment field. In addition to the excellent medical crew and the hospital, which equipped with advanced technologies.
During the surgery
The procedure has two parts. First, your surgeon will create a small stomach pouch by dividing the top of the stomach from the rest of your stomach.
Next, they will divide a part of the small intestine and bring up the bottom end of the divided small intestine and attach it to the created small stomach pouch.
The surgeon will complete the procedure by connecting the divided small intestine to the small intestine further down so that the stomach digestive enzymes and acids from the bypassed stomach and first portion of the small intestine will finally mix with the food.
Gastric bypass surgery works by several techniques. First, similar to most weight loss procedures, the newly created pouch of the stomach is considerably smaller and facilitates significantly lower portions, which translates into fewer calories consumed.
Furthermore, the smaller stomach pouch causes less digestion of food, and a segment of the small intestine would absorb calories and nutrients that no longer have food going through it. So there is probably fewer calories degree and nutrients absorption.
The most important that the rerouting of the food path produces changes in gut hormones that enhance satiety and repress hunger. This operation takes one to two hours and is performed under general anesthesia.
After the surgery
After the process, you will be in a recovery room, where the medical crew will monitor you for any complications.
You will stay at the hospital for two nights or more. So, it would be best to have someone to be with you, or HayatMed will offer someone to stay with you. Click here to get more information.
You will begin a sugar-free liquid diet for a couple of weeks, then start eating pureed foods for two or three weeks, and finally, you can eat regular foods approximately after four weeks of the surgery.
The surgeon will prescribe a multivitamin and a calcium and vitamin D supplement. You’ll need to make periodic medical checkups to observe your health in the first several months after bariatric surgery.
It is normal to experience changes in your body as a reaction to the quick weight loss in the few months after sleeve gastrectomy, like dry skin, pain in the body, feeling tired, and temporary hair loss.
Keep in mind that after losing weight, it’s possible to retrieve some of the lost weight. You can avoid this by following a healthy diet and regular exercise.
The gastric bypass recovery time is approximately two weeks; then, you can back to your work. Follow your surgeon’s instructions regarding your return to the daily routine.
What to Expect After Gastric Bypass Surgery?
This procedure can provide long-term weight loss. However, the amount of weight loss depends on the change in your lifestyle behavior. You can lose approximately 60 percent, or more, of your weight within two years.
Furthermore, this surgery can improve your ability to perform routine daily activities and help you gain a healthy life.
Is Stomach Pain Common After Gastric Bypass Surgery?
Most types of weight loss surgery produce some meal size restriction, which means that after the process, you’ll be able to eat only small portions before the feeling of fullness.
However, the feeling of fullness will also be associated with discomfort and nausea.
As your body conforms with bariatric surgery, you’ll be more familiar with your limits, which means that you’ll know when you stop eating before feeling discomfort.
If you follow the surgeon’s aftercare instructions and eat small portions of highly nutritious meals, you will often be able to avoid stomach pain.
How Much Does It Cost?
Like any other surgery, the cost of this procedure varies depending on several factors like the geographic hospital location, the surgeon’s experience.
Noteworthy is that the surgery’s cost in some places may not include all fees, such as aftercare services and anesthesia. Recently, Istanbul has become the destination for many people worldwide to get medical services. The reasons behind that are the affordable prices there, the highly skilled doctors, and the distinctive medical services.
In Turkey, Gastric Bypass Surgery costs approximately $ 3,000 to $6,000. While in the USA, it can cost about $23,000, and in the UK, the price ranges between £8,000 to £15,000 according to National Health Service ( NHS).
Here, at HayatMed, we provide you with all fully inclusive fee package. This package includes all the services associated with the surgery, such as hospital charges, surgeons and anesthetist’s fees, and aftercare policy.
